In about 20 seconds will hear the call of the Pink footed goose. The Pink foot is considerably smaller than the Greylag, the average size being 60 - 75 cm. Its call is of a more musical nature and has a sort of "wink wink" sound, although it does also "honk" in a tri syllable call, it is much more vocal than the Grey especially in flight. The Pinkie is the most abundant winter quarry goose and a record 128,000 over wintered in Britain in the mid eighties. Migration usually occurs as with Greys in late September to mid October when the birds arrive in Northern Britain mainly from Iceland and East Greenland. They are more slender in appearance than Greys and have a blue grey forewing which is darker than the Greys but lighter than the White fronted. Its flight action is fast and sometimes aerobatic. It has a barred greyish back, beige coloured chest area and a dark head and neck, the rear under body being the usual white. Its bill is short with pink and black markings. It can be found on salt marshes, lakes, estuaries and arable land, its food preferences are grass, barley and other grains and potatoes. Again watch stubble, potato and grain fields. Confusion can occur with the Bean goose and it was once thought that it was a sub species of Pinkie but it has since been found to be a totally separate species. At 65 - 80 cm it is a similar size but being much scarcer, usually only a few appear in South West Scotland and Norfolk each winter, there will probably not be much chance of encountering the Bean goose unless you visit one of the two areas. It has a dark upper wing and deep call which aids identification, its neck and head profile are also longer than the Pinkies.
