The South Humber Area Joint Council of Wildfowling Clubs Affiliated to BASC
The SHAJC is an organisation which was formed many years ago to help protect and promote the interests of wildfowlers shooting around the river Humber in North Lincolnshire. Wildfowling has long been a tradition on the Humber and with the formation of such organisations will continue to be for many years into the future. "Conserving Tomorrows Wildfowling Today" is the motto of the SHAJC and with such organisations in operation our wildfowling heritage is in good and safe hands. They are actively represented on the Upper Humber Wildfowling committee (UHWC) which is an organisation to provide liason between clubs on both the north and south banks of the Humber, other organisations such as the BASC and English Nature are also represented this helps to maintain a well balanced strategy with regard to both shooting and conservation along the upper Humber areas.
As an organisation the SHAJC controls several areas of foreshore shooting on the south bank of the river and wildfowlers as members of the affiliated clubs are able to shoot on a strictly run permit scheme. A section of the South shore has been opened up to BASC members on a day permit scheme to allow wildfowlers from outside the area to visit and hopefully enjoy the wildfowling on offer. The area is wardened by the members of the SHAJC organisations on the south bank, the north bank is also wardened by the clubs on that side of the river and there are two full time wardens appointed by English Nature, the wardening ensures that the quarry and area are treated with the utmost respect. The appointed wardens carry out bird counts and thus are able to report anything untoward affecting the bird population or the area in general.
The SHAJC are actively involved at present in the "Humber Estuary Management Scheme" which seeks to provide flood relief for those areas under threat of flooding along the length of the Humber and it's two mains tributaries the Trent and the Ouse. The Environment Agency will by the selective flooding of agricultural land seek to alleviate the problem of flooding in residential areas adjacent to the rivers.
